Chongqing Sidewalk (3) A sidewalk in the city of Chongqing, in Sichuan province. These glazed bricks make up the surface of a pedestrian mall in a closed off section of downtown. In the States, it seems that urban pedestrian spaces tend not to work. (After all you can't park your car out in front of the shop if you're not allowed to drive there, and if you can't drive right there why go?) In China however, the culture of the automobile has not yet taken hold, so the pedestrian spaces thrive.
