The Sanford Institute
of Public Policy is named for the late Terry Sanford, former North Carolina
Governor and U.S. Senator, who served as Duke's president from 1969-1985.
In his inaugural presidential address in 1969, Sanford declared his interest
in creating a new program at Duke dedicated to training future public
leaders; two years later, the institute was opened. Today, it is home
to undergraduate and graduate programs devoted to government leadership,
philanthropy, ethics, journalism and international development. |
