Sanford Institute of Public Policy
IPIX Navigation
The Sanford Institute of Public Policy is named for the late Terry Sanford, former North Carolina Governor and U.S. Senator, who served as Duke's president from 1969-1985.

In his inaugural presidential address in 1969, Sanford declared his interest in creating a new program at Duke dedicated to training future public leaders; two years later, the institute was opened. Today, it is home to undergraduate and graduate programs devoted to government leadership, philanthropy, ethics, journalism and international development.
